HP40 is road-trip heaven. With boulderside camping, festival
hosting, night-climbing and an adequate pro-shop on property, Horse
Pens is the amusement park of bouldering areas. Although sometimes a
little crowded, the energy is ALWAYS good at HP40, and the rock is
stellar.
The area is known for it's unique sandstone boulders
and abundance of slopers. Known as the "Fontanbleu of the Southeast"
Horsepens has a style all it's own.
HP40, open thanks in large part to the work of Adam Henry, Lee Means
and Cooper Roberts, boasts one of the strongest local crews of any area
in the southeast. Don't go here chasing numbers though, Horsepens
tends to operate on it's own grading scale, and more than a few v4/5's
have been mistaken for 7's or 8's by more than competant climbers.
